Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org) - Ethiopian soldiers withdrew from Guriel, 300km North of the Somali capital Mogadishu on evening of 27th December and insurgents took control of the town earlier on Friday, says a local leader.
“Islamic fighters approached the town earlier this month twice but now they took control of Guriel” said Abdi Haji, a local elder speaking to insidesomalia.org on the telephone line from Guriel.
The town is quite calm and Ethiopian military positions were overrun by angry mobs, said a witness.
Union of Islamic Courts who briefly controlled much of south and central Somalia, previously controlled Guriel before they were ousted by Ethiopian –backed Somali government troops early this year.
